My Top Travel Quotes

I have often read travel quotes for a quick shot of backpacking adrenaline. When I am planning and saving for a trip, they help me keep focused on the goal.  They take me back to some of my fondest traveling memories, give me inspiration, and help me find the courage to conquer and face any fear on my travel bucket list.

For this week’s post, I wanted to switch gears from my normal storytelling, and share with you some of my favorite travel quotes.

There are a couple reasons for this change.

1- I hope these quotes will give you the same inspiration, courage, and wanderlust that they instill in me.

2- I am going to be honest.  I was so busy getting my sister site, Copenhagen Rocks, ready for the same giveaway I had on A Backpacker’s Tale last week, that there was no way I would meet my post deadline.  I know this is no excuse and I apologize, but I promise the travel tales will be back in full swing next Tuesday.

Over the years, I have heard and read countless quotes, but there are always a select few that come back to me over and over again.

This list includes everything from Sayings About Adventure Travel to Inspirational Travel Quotes.  It is the full package!

My Top Ten Travel Quotes

1-  Not all those who wander are lost. – J. R. R. Tolkien

I think this is one of the greatest travel quotes of all time.  It always reminds me that while I might not have my future completely figured out, I am still on the right track to where I want to be in life.  In fact, I love this travel quote so much that it was my first tattoo as a constant reminder to never give up.  It reminds me that life is short.

2- “The world is a book and those who do not travel, read only one page.” – St. Augustine

This is one of those travel quotes that always make me imagine myself at 70 years old.  It is a challenge to see more, do more, and experience more.  When I look back on my life, I want a full book, overflowing with stories and memories.

3- “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” – Mark Twain

This is one of the best travel quotes, and is similar to our quotes by Epictetus. It keeps me in check to see the world with open eyes and a clear perspective.

4- “Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life.” – Jack Kerouac

Kerouac is a huge inspiration to me, and this quote always puts me in the mindset that I have “longer ways to go”; I’m not done seeing the world, having adventures, or experiencing different cultures.  Whenever I become immobile for too long, I think of this and I start saving to travel again.

5- “I shall be telling this with a sigh somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” ~ Robert Frost

This is a consent reminder of how I want to live my life.

6-  “Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Travel is a journey of self-discovery.  This is a reminder that while on the road, I need to look for the little changes happening within myself.  No doubt,  travel molds us.  I believe it molds me into a better person.

7- “I see my path, but I don’t know where it leads. Not knowing where I’m going is what inspires me to travel it.” ~ Rosalia de Castro

This travel saying reminds me to be spontaneous and never have a set plan.  Things change and sometimes instantly.  It is important to understand that sometimes that was the plan all along.

8- “When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable.  It is designed to make its own people comfortable.” ~ Clifton Fadiman

This always helps me to accept the differences in the culture I am in, even when I don’t understand them.

9- “I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” ~ Susan Sontag

This quote gives me the inspiration and courage to never give up on what I am doing and to always dream new dreams.

10-  “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.  So throw off the bowlines.  Sail away from the safe harbor.  Catch the trade winds in your sails.  Explore. Dream. Discover.” ~Mark Twain

This is another one of those quotes that motivates me to explore, dream, and live in the moment.

These travel quotes touch my soul and have had a direct impact on who I am and what I am doing.

  1. I love travel quotes. They are not only inspiring, but also so wise. When I read them on a regular basis, they make me wanna pack my backpack and just go for another adventure. I’m familiar with most of those you are sharing here, but there is one new one I totally love —> “When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable.”

  2. Nick - Nick's Travel Bug

Great list of quotes. The one from Mark Twain is my favorite as it always makes me think of sailing off to a tropical destination.

  3. Ha ha about the underwear!! I love these pictures and I do like that JR Tolkien quote. I’ve always liked that. I do get quite jealous of ones who can pack up and leave or explore a new place when they feel like it. Enjoy it!

  4. I LOVE #1. This is also a good one from the LOTR movie – “It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the
road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you
    might be swept off to.”

  5. Your first quote is like my quote for life. I often feel like I know what I want, and I’m working for it. But it’s not always easy to see for everyone else. You know what I mean!? Very cool post!

  6. Love travel quotes! They inspire me like nothing else!

This is my personal favorite. It’s not specific for travel, but nonetheless I feel invigorated to get out on the road!

    “You
have brains in your head and feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself
in any direction you choose! You’re on your own and you know what you
know. Only YOU can decide where to go!”

    Oh! The Places You’ll Go!
