Well, you’ve landed in the right place.

Whether you’re looking for a sense of bliss gazing out over mountainous terrain. Or discovering your adventurous nature while hiking through thick jungles. Many of us that heed the call into the unknown often find endless possibilities.

Compiling this list wasn’t easy. After all, the world is as vast as it is beautiful.

And as much as I would love to say that I’ve traveled every corner of the globe… I haven’t.

And I knew that if I had any chance of doing the subject justice, I’d need help.

So I’ve asked some of my fellow travel addicts to give me a hand to make the most extensive and detailed. And a well-rounded list of the best places to visit in the world.

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu, Peru! Ah, the lost city of the Inca, rediscovered in 1911, Machu Picchu is perched 2,430 meters above sea level in the Andes Mountains. Its remoteness and tough approach meant they largely spared it from the destruction that the Spanish wrought upon the Inca civilization. Making it the most complete example of Inca architecture. The site includes temples, palaces, plazas, and over 200 houses, all set within stunning scenery.

In the Andes Mountains in Peru, Machu Picchu is a historic site that has existed since the 15th century. This ancient site was discovered in 1911 and is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world.

GREAT BARRIER REEF, AUSTRALIA

Of all the places in Australia, the Great Barrier Reefbeautiful place so special is its one of the natural wonders of the world and the only living thing on earth that can be seen from space.

With colorful marine life and coral, you could spend hours snorkeling or diving in the Great Barrier Reef. Other ways to see this natural wonder is to fly above it in a helicopter or cruise in a glass-bottom boat. One thing to know about the Great Barrier Reef is not just a single reef but 3000 individual reef systems that are connected.

You can explore the Great Barrier reef from several Queensland cities. Including Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, and Mackay. CINQUE TERRE, ITALY

Last year I had the pleasure of staying in Cinque Terre for 3 days. I had looked forward to this part of Italy for a long time and wondered, “Will it live up to the hype?” Well, it did – I loved every part! The beauty during the day and the night are unsurpassed. There are so many beautiful opportunities to take gorgeous pictures throughout each of the towns.

We stayed in Monterosso and loved our stay there and the time we spent at the beach each day. And roaming through the streets at night enjoying the quiet nightlife.

We found delicious focaccia to eat, amazing gelato, and the best Italian pizza and seafood, too! When we weren’t eating, we were taking pictures of all the quaint houses and doors and the stunning views of the sea.

It is easy to travel by ferry to the other towns that make up Cinque Terre. Each is equally beautiful with more pictures begging to be taken of colorful houses, fishing boats, and meeting squares.

It is such a beautiful, picturesque area that you just keep taking more and more pictures because you want to remember it forever. I remember taking pictures of the fishing boats and the church bell ringing at the same time and thinking, “This is a perfect moment that I will not forget”. And I haven’t.

Thousands visit Cinque Terra every year. Many come off cruises or travel to stay for just the day. Be sure to plan a stay in one of the towns, though.

Don’t do a one-day visit from Florence or any other city. It is after the crowds disperse that you see the beauty of the small villages and enjoy being one with them.

My favorite part of each day was afternoons when it was quiet and I felt like I was living there. I look forward to coming back and spending more time just hanging out in the beautiful Cinque Terre.

HAVASU FALLS, ARIZONA

Havasu Falls, in Northern Arizona, is a place that seems too incredible to be real until you see it with your own eyes. A turquoise-blue waterfall cascades over an 80-foot-high cliff of red desert limestone. At the base of the falls is an idyllic campground with tent sites dotted along the creek bed and shaded by the high canyon walls.

Besides Havasu Falls, you’ll find 4 more waterfalls to explore in Havasu Canyon – all of them perfect for swimming and sunbathing! And if you’re up for a real adventure, you can follow Havasu Creek to its confluence with the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon.

This beautiful camping destination is one highlight of the USA, but visiting Havasu Falls is not without its challenges. The campsite is only large enough for 300 people per night and you need to make camping reservations well in advance. The same as when planning a trip to the best camping in Duluth Minnesota.. Camping reservations for Havasu Falls are made available on February 1st of each year. And the campground usually books up for the entire year within a couple of days.

Also, you’ll have to carry everything you need for Havasu Falls 10 miles on your back through a dusty desert canyon, as the waterfall is only accessible by foot. But when you dive into the cool blue water at the base of the waterfall, you’ll know it was all worth it!

WADI RUM, JORDAN

Wadi Rum is a breathtaking desert scape in Southern Jordan filled with red sand dunes, towering rock mesas, and infinite horizons. As one of the most unique and other-worldly locations on earth. Wadi Rum has been used as the setting for other planets in big-budget movies like Star Wars, Prometheus, and The Martian. It was also frequented by T. E Lawrence (commonly known as ‘Lawrence of Arabia’). during the Arab Revolt, who described the landscape as “Vast, Echoing and God-Like”.

Millions of years ago, the land of Wadi Rum was covered by the ocean. Over the millennia, the water, weather, and tectonic shifts eroded the granite and sandstone. Leaving behind the beautiful and irregular rock towers which dot the landscape. The dramatic red color of the sand is due to iron oxide, all of which combine to create the feeling that you are truly walking on the surface of another planet.

Anyone planning to visit Wadi Rum should plan to spend at least one night in a traditional Bedouin camp in the desert.

During the day, there are countless activities to take part in, such as camel rides, jeep tours, and hiking. The absolute highlight is a jeep tour into the desert. Which visits some of the most famous of Wadi Rum’s landmarks, such as the house used by T. E. Lawrence, and the incredible stone bridge. Simply driving between locations in our open-aired jeep was awe-inspiring, soaking in the vastness of this incredible landscape.

As night falls, you huddle around the campfire, eating a traditional Bedouin meal. And listening to songs of the desert played on a Rebab (an 8th-century Bedouin string instrument). Like almost all nights in Wadi Rum, the sky is cloudless, and the stars are incredible.

Watching the sunset, the stars move across the sky. And the sunrise over the desert sands is an incredible experience, and something no one should miss.

PLITVICE LAKES NATIONAL PARK, CROATIA

If you’re asking yourself, “Where should I travel” then Plitvice is your answer.

Plitvice Lakes National Park, in the heart of Croatia, is one of the most naturally stunning places on earth. The park is full of waterfalls. Seriously, there are so many beautiful waterfalls in Plitvice Lakes that your head will spin. The trails and wooden walkways around the park make for an excellent adventure in this waterfall wonderland.

Let’s first cover the waterfall details. Throughout the park, there are 90 waterfalls that cascade between 16 gorgeous lakes.

The tallest waterfall in the park, Veliki Slap, is over 250 feet tall! The water itself is a beautiful blue-green color, which changes based on the amount of sunlight that day and the depth of the water. All of this adds up to an absolutely lovely place to hike and explore.

Throughout Plitvice Lakes, National parks are many hikes and walkways that take you to new areas of the park. The wooden walkways are all made with wood from the park and take you to two places you wouldn’t ordinarily be able to reach.

For instance, a few of the piers go far out into the water, and a few hug a cliff so that you are walking almost suspended in the air! If you are a hiking enthusiast, there is no shortage of trails to explore both in the Upper and Lower section of the park.

You will love the beauty you find in Plitvice Lakes. TLC was wrong. You should, by all means, go chasing waterfalls, and the first place you should go is Plitvice Lakes, National Park. Plitvice Lakes is one of the best places to visit in Europe.

TONGARIRO ALPINE CROSSING

The Tongariro Crossing’s often hailed as the best day hike in New Zealand. To this day, it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world I’ve ever visited. And in a country as incredible as New Zealand, that’s saying something.

The Tongariro Crossing lies a quick bus ride outside of picturesque Lake Taupo. The hike fuses the best landscape in a single epic 8-hour hike.

Throughout the hike, you traverse through thick brush, barren plateaus, active volcanoes, emerald lakes, and green forests.

You even pass through Mordor, as seen in Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. And walk in the shadow of Mt. Doom, aka Mount Ngauruhoe.

The lipid pools are another highlight. These Emerald Lakes are named spot on. Because of the high density of volcanic minerals, these lakes glow with a radiant green hue.

The Tongariro’s a kaleidoscope of New Zealand‘s most unspoiled scenery. And is a great addition for anyone backpacking New Zealand.

OAHU, HAWAII

Have you ever visited a place that you’ve been dreaming of for years, and it turned out to be even better than you expected? I have pretty high expectations when I’m traveling, especially after seeing photos of the destination.

Unfortunately, that also means that it’s pretty easy to get disappointed.

However, there’s one place that exceeded my already high expectations tremendously Oahu. This Hawaiian island truly is as magical as the photos tell you, if not even more! Oahu has something for everyone, not only for those who like relaxing at beaches.

There are lots of adventures like snorkeling or diving, incredible hikes, and for all the foodies out there, several unique dishes to try!

I’ve been to Oahu twice. And the best memories from my trips are sharing the beach with turtles, hiking to the top of mountains, and the enormous waves on the North Shore. An amazing travel memories.

If you haven’t got enough reasons already to visit Oahu, here’s one more. For everyone who enjoys exploring locations seen in movies – Jurassic Park was filmed on Oahu and, yes, filming locations are a great addition to any Oahu itinerary!

HA LONG BAY, VIETNAM

One of the most beautiful places I’ve visited in recent years has to be Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay. It’s magnificent, tranquil, and a good place to think about quotes by Epictetus. And is the place that you’ll remember forever.

Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site a few hours’ drive outside of the capital, Hanoi. The best way to see it is to book a cruise around the bay (you can choose from day cruises or longer overnight stays).

A cruise gives you the chance to sail out into the bay and get up close to some of the islands of limestone rock that jut out here, there, and everywhere. There are almost 2,000 of these scattered over an area of 600 square miles.

The boats go slowly, and sitting on the outside deck, looking out at these huge natural formations, is wonderful. You get a genuine feeling of peace and tranquility. If you’ve come from a sightseeing trip to Vietnam’s frenetic capital, this is a welcome contrast.

You can also stop off and visit sights within the bay. We got to explore Sung Sot cave (otherwise known as “Surprise Cave”) – and just as good as the best caves in the United States.. A gigantic cavern of stalactites, stalagmites, and other rock formations.

The highlight of our trip, though, was visiting Ti Top island. The vista you get from here is just incredible.

You need to climb to the top of the island for this. Once there, you’ll get breathtaking views out across the bay and a much clearer sense of its scale. You can see the islands in the bay and all the boats lazily floating in between them from this height.

From this perspective, you get to appreciate Ha Long Bay’s awe-inspiring beauty. It’s an extraordinary place that should be on everyone’s list on a trip to Vietnam. Just make sure you book carefully! Which is one thing I wish I knew before Vietnam.

TORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK, CHILE

They feature Torres del Paine National Park on almost every postcard from Patagonia for a reason. It truly is one of the most beautiful places on earth.

The craggy peaks called the Cuernos del Paine (Horns of Paine) tower dramatically over bright aqua alpine lakes. In spring, thousands of bushes burst into red flowers. Enormous glaciers, connected to the enormous Southern Patagonia icefield, slowly snake their way downside of mountains or crawl into grey lakes, strewn with brilliant blue icebergs.

Overhead, powerful winds drag clouds into UFO-like pillars of white, perched atop mountain peaks. Deep in the hills, the first sunlight of the day turns the eponymous Torres del Paine (Towers of Paine) an iridescent orange.

The weather doesn’t always cooperate, but when it does, the scenery will take your breath away. Highlights include hiking the French Valley, and passing Paine Grande mountain. And climbing to a lookout facing the crackling French Glacier. And overlooking jeweled lakes strewn across the lands below. Take a cruise from Grey Lake to the face of Glacier Grey; and several lookouts, such as Condor Point with stunning views of the park. MOUNT EVEREST BASE CAMP, NEPAL

Stand amongst the giants of the Himalayas. Revel in undisrupted views of mountains and ice. The Khumbu region in Nepal offers this experience.

In the eastern part of Nepal, the Khumbu region is home to the Sherpa people and the world’s highest mountain. Mount Everest is in the Sagarmatha National Park.

Every year thousands of trekkers make their way to Everest Base Camp. The more adventurous souls come in May, attempting the summit.

BLUE LAGOON, ICELAND

The Blue Lagoon is an experience that will stay with you for a lifetime. And the water is a bright blue color, and the scenery is breathtaking. Mountains surround the lagoon, making it the perfect place to relax and take in nature.

The Blue Lagoon is also one of the 25 wonders of the world, but not one of the 7 Wonders of the World Modern Day. This geothermal seawater creates a transformational spa.

PAMIR HIGHWAY, KYRGYZSTAN

The Pamir highway is one of the most beautiful places in Asia. The highway that runs from Dushanbe in Tajikistan to Osh in Kyrgyzstan is the second highest in the world, reaching over 4500 meters. You will drive past lush valleys, barren lunar landscapes, and glittering mountain lakes.

The Pamir mountains are some of the most remote parts of Tajikistan. The road runs along the borders of Afghanistan and China and crosses two mountain passes before entering Kyrgyzstan. One of the most beautiful places in the world is Death Valley, California. Death Valley is a beautiful national park in the USA full of otherworldly scenery, desert landscapes, spectacular sunsets, and amazing hiking options.

Most visitors expect a barren desert when they visit Death Valley. Yet there is so much beauty to be discovered in the largest national park outside of Alaska. Drive over the Panamint Mountains with plenty of water and a camera to explore this beautiful place.

Once you arrive in Death Valley, you can hike in a slot canyon such as Golden Canyon or climb the Mesquite Flat sand dunes. Drive into the heart of the valley past the Artist’s Pallet towards Bad Water Basin.

Bad Water Basin is 280 feet below sea level and is the lowest place in North America! If that sounds too hot, drive back out and head into the Death Valley mountains.

Make sure you stop off and see the view from Zabriskie Point. Zabriskie Point is a magical place and must be one of the best places to travel in 2020. You can go even higher into the mountains on well-maintained roads to the fantastically named Dante’s Viewpoint. From here, you can see how vast Death Valley is.

Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands are a stunning archipelago located in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Ecuador. This remote and isolated group of islands is home to some of the most unique and diverse wildlife on Earth, making it one of the most beautiful places in the world.

The Galapagos Islands are made up of 13 main islands, 6 smaller islands, and over 40 islets, and are the  most amazing volcanic islands in the world. 

POSITANO, ITALY

Italy’s Amalfi Coast is famously one of the most beautiful places in the world – and the town of Positano is the undoubted star.

Beloved haunt of the rich and famous, Positano is the place where you go to relax, drink in some glorious scenery, and escape the paparazzi (because we all have them following us around, right?).

The town itself attracts day-trippers, celebs, and sun-seekers for the same reason: it’s just a stunningly beautiful place to be. Pastel-colored houses perch precariously, and photographically, down a cliff-side that has a sea-lapped beach at its feet. Narrow streets, house restaurants, bakeries, and gelaterias. Montego Bay sets along the north coast of the island of Jamaica in the Caribbean Sea south of Cuba. This tropical island paradise has long been considered a top tourist destination, and it’s easy to see why. The destination that surprised me the most during 2019 was Cape Verde. The little archipelago just off the coast of Senegal is not only beautiful but also has a very peculiar and fascinating culture.

The must-do activity in Cape Verde is to go trekking in Santo Antao, the westernmost island. Santo Antao differs from the rest of the country because of its unique climate. The high mountains stop clouds from arriving from the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and provide the island with abundant rain. As a result, it has much more vegetation than near Sao Vicente.

The mountainous landscape permits you to enjoy long hikes with breathtaking views over the sea and neighboring islands. The starting point to visit Santo Antao is Paul Valley in the northeast. From here, all the major towns and trekking itineraries are reachable. And sleeping close to the mountains will give you a well-deserved relaxing time after a day of climbing.

If you visit Santo Antao in 2023, do not forget to do the Cha de Igreja – Ponta do Sol itinerary. This average-difficulty hike goes all along the northern coast of Santo Antao and offers the best views of the island and one of the best places to visit in the world.

NOSY IRANJA, MADAGASCAR

Nosy Iranja is a tiny paradise island in northern Madagascar. It’s two islands connected by a 1.2km long white sandbank stretching across the clear turquoise water. Iranja Kely is the smaller one, and with some luck, you can observe sea turtles lay their eggs here. On the bigger island, Iranja Komba, there is a small village where the locals sell their handicrafts on the beach today trippers.

If you like turtles, you will love snorkeling off the sandbank as huge green turtles hang around and snack all day long, and you will have to move away as they will come straight at you. Respect wildlife and don’t hang onto them or try to touch them or even feed them.

Nosy Iranja is a popular day trip by boat from the nearby island of Nosy Be, but there is a hotel on Iranja Kely, and people can enjoy several activities other than snorkeling, like windsurfing, scuba diving, and jet skiing. Other than water activities, it is pretty nice to walk around Iranja Komba to explore the village life, but respect the locals, ask before you take photos of people, and respect their homes.

HIERVE EL AGUA, OAXACA

The remote location of this beautiful destination sets the perfect backdrop to admire the beauty of Hierve el Agua in Oaxaca.

Perched high atop a cliff, overlooking the lush valleys and mountains, is an infinity pool fed by a natural spring bubbles up from the ground. While the name would imply that the water is hot, it is, in fact, just a mild temperature that warms up with the sun.

The landscape and pools themselves are photogenic, but below is a natural wonder – one of only two petrified waterfalls in the world. Formed over thousands of years, the mineralized rock appears to cascade down the cliff into the valley below.

You’ll want to make use of the hiking trails within the site that lead to magnificent views of the waterfall from a different angle. Giethoorn, also known as the Venice of The Netherlands, is one scenic little village that boasts of having no roads.

It is in the northeastern province of Overijssel and can easily be reached from Amsterdam or Utrecht by train to the nearest town and a bus from there straight to the village.

Built on a series of canals, with pretty cottages built on lush green patches of land on either side and tiny bridges connecting this web of canals, the town looks like something straight out of a fairytale.

The fact that the village is mostly car-free adds to the rustic charm of this fairytale town.

The best way to see the town is to rent out an electric boat and just steer through the narrow canals of the village and spend your time soaking in views of the beautiful houses and the peace the town has to offer or you could also just hop on a water taxi and cruise around the canals with other groups of tourists.

Other things to do in the city include a visit to the Museum of Giethoorn, which details the history of the region for you.

LAS POZAS, MEXICO

Las Pozas is an incredibly special place that combines both nature and architecture to create a surreal, mind-boggling concrete paradise high in the Sierra mountains and tucked deep into a Mexican jungle the likes of which I could never have imagined. It is about 8 hours north of Mexico City in the beautiful state of San Luis Potosi.

The concrete jungle was the brainchild of the surrealist artist Edward James. It took several decades to finish and includes spiral staircases, waterfalls, many animals, and concrete orchids among so many other things. You can tell that this has been formed over decades because of the sheer amount of bizarre concrete platforms and structures and that even with a giant workforce that this was no simple task.

The morning we arrived, there was already a small queue. We arrived before opening hours, so I suggest getting there early to avoid any crowds.

Once inside, though it is fairly easy to get away from most of the crowds as there are endless things to see hidden in amongst the jungle with staircases and pathways taking you in every direction and if you are not afraid of exploration, then you can easily spend an entire day in here trying to take in the thousands of small details that have been buried in amongst the incredible landscape and nature.

KARIJINI NATIONAL PARK, AUSTRALIA

Karijini National Park Australia has a multitude of amazing places, but Karijini National Park in Western Australia is one of the most beautiful in the world. Karijini is in the Hamersley Ranges in the Pilbara Region.

It is a picturesque place with stunning red rock gorges and natural swimming holes. Seeing the contrast of the trees, deep red rocks and the blue sky is a treat for every nature lover.

Karijini has a thriving flora and fauna that includes red kangaroos, rock wallabies, and echidnas. Karijini National Park offers many incredible gorge hikes and lookouts.

Therefore, everyone can find something that suits their preferences. Some of the most stunning hikes are the Hancock Gorge and Dales Gorge. Both are incredibly picturesque, and while they are short in terms of distance, the terrain means that hiking takes around an hour.

Hancock Gorge leads you through a natural amphitheater, a Spider Walk, and ends in Kermit’s Pool. Going for a swim in this environment is a unique experience. The best time to visit Karijini National Park is between April and October when the temperatures are lower, and it does not rain a lot.

They renamed the national park in 1991 in recognition of the national park’s significance to the Aboriginal people. Visit the visitor’s center to learn something about the park’s history. I have seen large parts of Australia, but Karijini is my favorite place there.

If you explore it yourself, visit Fern Pool just before sunset, when the setting sun paints the pool in astonishing colors. And if you feel adventurous, I can only recommend climbing down the last part of Joffrey Gorge to reach the bottom of Joffrey Falls.

Australia’s a popular travel destination – it’s far from one of the least visited countries in the world – but let that keep you from visiting. Oz has some of the most beautiful places in the world.

PUNAKHA, BHUTAN

We visited Punakha on our recent travel to Bhutan. It is one of the most beautiful places we have been to. It was the capital of Bhutan till 1955 before being changed to Thimphu.

The change in scenery as we enter Punakha from any of the other districts is a treat to the eyes. Paddy fields adorn the landscape, and the different shades of green are just beautiful. Standing at an elevation of 4,075 feet above sea level, Punakha has a very pleasant climate, not too hot or cold!

Punakha is also home to some of the most popular tourist spots in Bhutan. The Punakha Dzong is the most famous of them all – being one of the largest and oldest Dzongs in Bhutan.

An interesting fact about the Dzong is that they built it without using even a single nail! The Dzong is located where the two rivers Mo and Pho Chhu merge.

The emerald waters of the rivers glimmer in the morning sun, making it such an amazing sight. The Suspension Bridge in Punakha is the longest in Punakha (160 meters) and is perched above the Pho Chhu river. River rafting is a major activity in Punakha.

The Chimi Lhakhang and the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten are some of the other popular spots.

The place is perfect for all those who love a good hike as most temples are on top of mountains and climbing is the only way to reach them! Reaching both these temples needs walking through beautiful paddy fields and then hiking up the mountain.

GUATAPÉ, COLOMBIA

Guatapé is a Spanish Colonial town known as the most colorful town in Colombia. It’s only a couple of hours away from Medellín, which makes for an easy and very popular day trip.

Guatapé is a celebration of small-town Colombia and you can see a slice of life not found in many of the larger cities here. The buildings are all painted in vibrant colors and feature zocalos, carved and brightly painted 3D motifs of village life customized to the interests of the house owner.

Near this exquisite small town is the stunning Guatapé Lake. This man-made reservoir was created for hydroelectric power and fuels just over a third of the country’s power. The old town of Peñol was destroyed when the valley was flooded to create the lake. A white cross in the middle of the lake marks the location where the town church is located under the water. You can visit a replica of the town near the lake and take a boat ride to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

The most stunning views of the lake and the surrounding area are from the top of La Piedra del Peñol, known simply as Peñol. This large granite rock is 7,000 feet tall (over 2,000 meters) and you can climb a concrete staircase to enjoy the views. At the top, there is a viewing area and a small shop where you can buy souvenirs and a tasty salted mango snack, or a Michelina, which is a beer with salted mango.

The Guatapé area offers something for everyone, with a quaint and colorful village and stunning views. It’s a must-see area when you visit Medellín.

ARRAIAL DO CABO, BRAZIL

Arraial does Cabo, also known as the Brazilian, Caribbean, is a coastal town I visited with my husband after staying in Rio de Janeiro for a few days.

It is called the South American Caribbean for an excellent reason.

Arraial do Cabo has mesmerizing white-sand beaches, such as Forno, Pontal do Atalaia, Farol, and Grande.

And honestly, these places have the most beautiful blue water my husband and I have ever seen.

One of these beaches, Forno, is so unique and clean that the Navy controls access to it rigorously to preserve its beauty. Tourists can’t enter the beach with food, drink, or cigarettes, and can only stay there for up to 40 minutes.

Access to Forno is made only by boat, as it is on an island just off the coast.

Near to this spot, the Blue Grotto is also a significant tourist attraction in the town, where many visitors pass by boat.

But Arraial do Cabo is surrounded not only by blue water and white sand beaches. Oh, no. Incredible wildlife also surrounds it.

Birds, fishes, sea turtles, and depending on the season, killer whales swim in the clear waters of this paradise. And entertain visitors in the distance.

When my husband and I were here, birds would dive right next to us to catch the fishes that were swimming between our legs. It was a unique moment!

LAKE BAIKAL, SIBERIA

Located in mystical Siberia, Lake Baikal is considered to be the deepest lake in the world. It is not yet overcrowded by tourism as its remote location makes it slightly difficult to reach. If you prefer spending time in luxurious resorts, this trip probably isn’t for you. But those who enjoy nature, simple village life, and nature getaways might find it just the place they were looking for all along.

The best seasons to visit are summer and winter. And it could be one of the best places to travel to in December. During cold Siberian days, you will find the top of the lake frozen. Which creates magical patterns and offers different ice activities. In summer you can enjoy hiking trails, swimming, a Russian sauna and so much more. Some places around the lake are believed to have special significance for shamanism. So make sure you don’t miss stories about these intriguing spots.

While lake Baikal is a must-stop on the Trans-Siberian railway journey, you don’t have to spend many days getting there. Fly to Irkutsk and take a 6-hour trip to Olkhon island to explore its capes, rocks, and villages.

Or go to Listvyanka, which is more touristy, but easier to get to. Whatever you choose, make sure to treat the lake and its islands with respect and enjoy your rural getaway from the busy city life. And one of the top places to visit in the world.

Most people think of Hong Kong as a purely urban jungle, and with over 9,000 high-rise buildings in the city, it is understandable why. However, what most people don’t know is that about 75% of Hong Kong’s landmass is green space. This includes urban parks and open spaces.

From Hong Kong Island to Kowloon to way up north in the New Territories, Hong Kong’s 24 country parks offer a variety of terrain and opportunities for enjoying the great outdoors.

One very off-the-beaten-path country park is Lam Tsuen Country park, where you can hike Razor Edge Ridge in Hong Kong. This ridge hike is most suitable for intermediate hikers and above. But if you put in the effort to traverse this ridge, you’ll experience some of the most spectacular mountain views Hong Kong has to offer.

Mongolia is a well and truly off-the-beaten-track destination, and most people know very little about it. But if people have heard of one place in the country, that place is probably the Gobi Desert. Along with Khuvsgul Lake (which is more popular with domestic Mongolian tourists), the Gobi is the most visited part of Mongolia. What many people don’t realize until they get there, though, is that the Gobi is not like other deserts.

While there is one long stretch of undulating dunes, most of the Gobi is not a complete desert. And sustains quite a few life forms, of both the flora and fauna varieties. Animals that live here range in size from tiny lizards to the double-humped Bactrian camel. The landscapes of the Gobi are incredibly diverse, and each one is more beautiful than the next.

There are the deep red, so-called “Flaming Cliffs” at Bayan Zag, the rounded boulders of Baga Gazrin Chuluu, and the surprisingly verdant Yolyn Am Gorge. To immerse yourself in nature and be awed by spectacular scenery, there’s no place like the Gobi Desert.

Glacier National Park is one of the most stunning places in the world. The park is home to over 130 named glaciers, as well as countless rivers, lakes, and hiking trails. The views from the summit of any of the park’s mountains are breathtaking, and the wildlife is incredible. Glacier National Park is a must-see for anyone who loves nature and beauty. 

ADAM’S PEAK, SRI LANKA

After spending three months traveling around the beautiful island of Sri Lanka (and loving every minute!), the one experience that we’ll never forget is hiking Adam’s Peak.

Located in Southern Sri Lanka, Adam’s Peak is a monumental mountain, climbed by more than 20,000 pilgrims each year to visit a holy footprint at the summit. Buddhists believe the footprint belongs to Buddha, and Hindus believe it belongs to Lord Shiva. And both Muslims and Christians believe it is Adam’s first step after Eden.

Regardless of their faith, all pilgrims climb in harmony up 5,500 steps to reach the holy area at 2,243m.

As a traveler, one of the most incredible experiences you can have is to join the pilgrims in the ascent of the mountain. However, it’s no light task! The 5,500 steps are pretty grueling, even for the very fit, and you’ll feel coming back down for days to come. Despite this, you’ll be hiking alongside hundreds of white-robed pilgrims from tiny children to the greatest of grandparents.

However agonizing the route is, this doesn’t even touch on the experience of watching the sunrise at 2,243m. Surrounded by devoted pilgrims of many different faiths. It is a beautiful travel experience like no other and shouldn’t be passed up if you visit Sri Lanka.

Altogether it takes around 6 hours to go up and down; just make sure you take a headtorch and some warm layers for the top – it gets mighty cold!

I’ve been traveling around the world for over a decade. And I realized that no matter how many sights and countries I visited, my own Italy and Sardinia in particular are still on top of the best places in the world.

Do you think I am biased? Not, according to plenty of authoritative sources online, Sardinia holds a few international records. Not only for the famous Guinness world record of the oldest family alive but especially for its pristine sea, and other activities that are not as popular as its beaches.

So why do I think my lovely region holds the title of the best place in the World? Simply put, the things to do in Sardinia in high and low seasons are practically endless, highly fascinating, and suggestive indeed.

Hiking Su Gorropu Canyon 

From the Nuraghe Di Barumini, a UNESCO Heritage site, to “Su Gorropu” Canyon, the deepest one in Europe, Sardinia truly has it all!

And what about the breathtaking “Selvaggio Blu”, one of the most difficult treks in Europe? Yes, you’ve understood it right, who would have thought that Sardinia could rank so high for an activity reserved for the Alpinists and mountain lovers? Sardinia offers so much more than its spectacular beaches which are so famous all over the world.

Of course, with this premise, the beaches alone could grant Sardinia a prime spot in the list of the best places in the world. But my region’s activities and sights are indeed plentiful to satisfy both tourists and locals alike.

Fariy MEADOWS, PAKISTAN

There are so many beautiful places to visit in Pakistan, but Fairy Meadow is without a doubt at the top of the list. Getting there is no easy feat, but it’s one of the dreamiest places you could ever camp. With incredible views of Nanga Parbat (the 9th highest mountain in the world) outside your tent, it’s heaven for outdoor lovers.

Getting to Fairy Meadows involves an hour-and-a-half jeep ride up a mountain, which is not for the faint of heart. With hairpin turns alongside a mountain with no guardrails, you may not want to look out the window during the ride. After the jeep drops you off, another 2-3 hours of trekking is required to get to the campsite.

The journey will be all worth it, though, when you first see Nanga Parbat appear in front of your eyes as you approach the campsite.

What makes Fairy Meadows so special is the accessibility to Nanga Parbat. Unlike many of the world’s highest mountains, which require multi-day treks to get to base camp, Nanga Parbat can be reached in just four hours.

If you aren’t up for a full day of hiking, there are plenty of other smaller hikes around where you can see reflecting lakes, alpine forests, and magnificent glaciers.

SIQUIJOR ISLAND, PHILIPPINES

Siquijor Island was not only my #1 favorite place in all of my travels; it was one of the most beautiful places, too! Siquijor is a more off-the-beaten-path island in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines. Though the secret is slowly but surely getting out, and with good reason. The main strip of the beach called San Juan is downright gorgeous, with soft, pearl-white sand, and towering coconut palms. And shallow water for at least 100-150 meters at high tide.

This can allow you to lie down in some parts and soak up the saltwater while basking in the midday sun. Beyond this part of the water, a little further out, is also some incredible underwater scenery, with lots of colorful fish and bountiful corals brimming with life. Be sure to bring your mask and snorkel!

Although snorkeling is top-notch, the top thing to do in Siquijor. It is definitely to pay a visit to the heavenly Cambugahay Falls, in the Lazi township area of the island. This 3-tier waterfall has lots of room for swimming, vines for swinging, and several jump-off points into each of its powder-blue pools. There is also a makeshift “chilling” hut in the lowest pool, made of tree branches. And bamboo is also a brilliant spot to grab some shots of this genuine miracle of nature.

Overall, I can’t stress Siquijor’s absolute and total beauty enough; you’ve got to go see it for yourself!

LAMPINIGAN ISLAND BASILAN, PHILIPPINES

Lampinigan Island is one islet in Basilan. It is a place that is just slowly opening up to tourism so you can see the rawness of the place. It’s not well-developed in human structures, unlike its more famous sister island, Malamawi. But the pure beauty of the natural seascape and landscape of Lampinigan will take any tourist’s breath away.

On Lampinigan Island, there is no resort but a free beach with some cottages maintained by the island dwellers. You can walk and play in the fine, white sand there as the waves gently lap at your feet. Or you can swim in the crystal clear waters to your heart’s content. If you’re more adventurous, try snorkeling to see the amazing marine life or dive from the towering rock formations beside the beach. Sunbathing is also a must-try here.

HERAKLION, CRETE

The main gate to Greece’s biggest island, Heraklion, is a lot more than just the capital of Crete. Home to a vibrant cultural panorama and spectacular beaches. Heraklion is a wonderful place that rightfully deserves a stop during any visit to the Greek islands.

Among the things to do in Heraklion, you shouldn’t want to miss seeing one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. The Minoan Palace of Knossos is just minutes from the city center, and it’s a perfect introduction to the history of the island.

Discover some unique Minoan findings in the Archaeological Museum after your visit. It will help you understand the enigmas of this ancient civilization.

Since we’re discussing a Greek island, things wouldn’t feel right without going to the beach. Pack your flip-flops and reach the south of Heraklion to visit Matala, one of the well-known beaches of Crete. Matala was a traditional hippie destination during the seventies. With its mysterious caves, pristine sea, and flower-power vibe.

Back to the capital, devote a day to exploring the modern city. Have a Greek coffee and a bougatsa (a local traditional pastry) in Liontaria, the main square. Next up, set out to explore Agios Minas, a former mosque and now one of Crete’s many beautiful churches. Finally, walk along the old port to admire Crete’s Venetian past at the Koules, an imposing Venetian Fortress right on the sea.

FIORDLAND NATIONAL PARK, NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. And although it was hard to choose, Fiordland National Park may have been the most beautiful location on the New Zealand South Island. Far down on the South Island, past Queenstown, sits Fiordland National Park. I visited the park twice during my time in New Zealand, once during the winter and once in late summer, and both times the park was magical.

Driving through the park, you’ll consistently change between different scenery. Including mountains, large open fields, and forest-like coverage. The major tourist attraction to the park is Milford Sound and well worth it if time permits. Bus day trips from Queenstown or Wanaka are possible and personal vehicles. If in the New Zealand South Island I can’t recommend Fiordland enough!

SAFARI, BOTSWANA

One of the most beautiful places in the world is Botswana’s Okavango Delta. The Okavango is a vast grassy plain in Northern Botswana that floods seasonally to become a lush animal habitat. The floods begin when water runs down from the rain-soaked Angolan Highlands. Unlike a river flowing to the sea, the floodwaters drain into Northern Botswana and eventually run out at the Kalahari Desert. This occurs each June and lasts through most of October when the landscape transforms once again.

During the flooding period, locals navigate the water system with dugout canoes or mokoro. They’re steered with a pole and used to navigate around grass tufts, hippos, crocodiles, and elephants. The flood plains are preserved by two large national parks,

The Chobe National Park and Moremi Game Reserve. In these parks, wildlife is abundant and active. The area is teeming with giraffes, zebras, elephants, cape buffalo, lions, leopards, and more. During the flood period, over 200,000 animals migrate from the desert to the delta, and it’s the perfect time for safari tours in Botswana. The entire environment is surreal, and when you visit, it’s impossible not to marvel at nature. What truly makes the Okavango Delta so beautiful is the natural habitat – it’s the closest thing you can get to Eden on today’s Earth.

THE GREAT WHITE DESERT OF GUJARAT, INDIA

The Great White Desert, also known as Rann of Kutch, is one of a kind. It is a salt marsh in the Thar Desert in the Kutch region of Gujarat state in India.

The name ‘Rann’ comes from the Hindi language and means ‘Desert’. Kutch means ‘surrounded by water is the largest district in the state of Gujarat and is surrounded by the Arabian Sea in the west and the south. We also know it as ‘mystery land’ and is in a remote location, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

There are few places on this earth more beautiful than Yosemite National Park. The soaring granite cliffs, rushing waterfalls, and verdant meadows of this California park draw visitors from all over the world.

Whether you’re hiking to the top of Half Dome, or marveling at the sight of Yosemite Falls. Or simply enjoying a picnic in the meadows, it’s impossible to not be awestruck by the natural beauty of this place. 

MOUNT BROMO, INDONESIA

Mount Bromo in East Java, Indonesia, is nothing short of amazing with its volcanoes. Surrounded by several volcanoes and a massive caldera wrapping around a sea of sand. Mount Bromo and the raw surroundings are, without a doubt, the most impressive landscape we set eyes on in East Java.

Jeeps are the most popular way of doing a Bromo tour. However, we skipped the tour. We based ourselves in Cemoro Lawang, a hamlet on the caldera’s rim and a good starting point.

We started by visiting Bromo at sunset time. This way, we avoided the morning crowds.

Mount Bromo is relatively close and would be around a 20-minute walk on normal terrain. But, considering each step sinks 6″ into soft sand, it will take around 45 minutes to reach the foot of Bromo. A flight of stairs leads the way up to the rim of the crater.

Mount Bromo isn’t such a large volcano. However, standing on the rim of a volcano with fumes spitting out its mouth. And knowing this is an active volcano, I guarantee, the experience is thrillingly interesting.

The following morning, at 2:30, am we were on our way to King Kong hill. Most of the trek is uphill along steep and winding roads, and the last part is through the forest. The streets and especially the forest are pitch black. Therefore, it is best to use headlamps and keep your hands free.

Hiking is the most challenging way of reaching King Kong hill. However, is rewarding once the day brightens up. From King Kong hill, you will look directly onto Mount Bromo. Surrounded by a plain of sand and other volcanos, a backdrop of tumbling hills, and a dominating Mount Semeru, Java’s tallest volcano.

LAKE DISTRICT, UNITED KINGDOM

The Lake District in England is one of the most underrated places in the world, but easily one of the most beautiful. This is, perhaps, the perfect combination for travelers and vacationers.

The Lake District is in north-western England and is not usually a destination for foreigners, which means it should be at the top of your bucket list. Whether you’re looking for some of the most vibrant sunsets in the world, or hikes with mountain views in the fresh air, the Lake District is for you.

As photographers, we love the Lake District because it seems to be completely unknown to tourists galore. No matter if you visit in the chilly winter. Or the heat of the summer, you likely won’t need a restaurant reservation, nor will you need to rise at dawn to avoid lines.

The area isn’t known for its public transportation, so you will need to rent a car during your stay to discover the top things to do in the lakes. Whatever you do, one of the most beautiful spots is Lake Windemere.

While this destination within the lakes is quite popular, still easily be able to get a boat, kayak, or other water sport booked. If you’re looking for somewhere to stay, the quaint town of Cartmel is far enough away from the main lakes to avoid outrageous lodging. And food prices are still central to the major attractions.

Sure, the lakes aren’t a beachfront villa in Bali. But they’re easily some of the best sunsets and mountain views you’ll find around the world, without all the tourists!

Big Bend National Park

There are few places in the world as stunning as Big Bend National Park in Texas. The park spans over 800,000 acres and includes three unique ecosystems: the Chihuahuan Desert, the Rio Grande, and the Davis Mountains. It is home to an incredibly diverse array of plants and animals. Including over 1,200 species of plants, 450 species of birds, 75 species of mammals, and 56 species of reptiles. The landscapes vary from towering mountains and canyons to desert plains. And river valleys, making it one of the most diverse and beautiful places on earth.

Yakushima Forest is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Located off the coast of Japan, Yakushima is one of the ancient forests that has been around for thousands of years. It is home to some of the oldest living trees in the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The forest is filled with lush vegetation and towering cedar trees that are hundreds of years old.

Tirol is an Austrian state in the country’s west, which is famous for its incredible mountains. It’s everything you’d imagine quintessential alpine culture to be. Then the snow-covered peaks, upbeat folk music, peaceful valleys, and lots of friendly, four-legged locals with bells around their necks. The quaint scenery in Tirol is just as much of a draw as the fun-loving locals and the wide variety of outdoor activities.

In the summer, Tirol is a paradise for hikers. You’ll find countless day hikes and long-distance routes that cross the entire region. If you choose the latter, you can hike from hut to hut on alpine ridges. Or even try out hair-raising via Ferrata or hiking. And rock climbing hybrid that often involves suspension bridges. As well as, ladders and steel support hammered into the sides of cliffs. You’ll also find excellent opportunities for camping, rafting, canyoning, rock climbing, and even paragliding.

When winter comes, snow bunnies and adrenaline junkies alike gather to ski the Austrian Alps. This is some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the world. With challenging slopes and views that stretch into neighboring Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. All things considered, winter sports are pretty affordable in Tirol, too.

In addition to fantastic skiing, the Après Ski culture is a huge highlight of winter in the Austrian Alps. Imagine remixed folk songs, steaming mulled wine, and dancing on benches in your ski boots, and you’ll start to get the idea.

If you love the outdoors and are drawn to the mountains, add Tirol to your bucket list right away. Few places on earth can rival its natural beauty and adventurous spirit.

Causeway Coast, Northern Ireland

It is located 75 km south of the world-famous Boracay Island. Remote and untouched, this province offers loads of relaxing and fun activities and destinations.

Islands with white sand beaches, stunning sandbars, rolling hills, clear waters, and a relaxing atmosphere. Visitors consistently call this paradise one of the best places to visit in the world.

Kawa Hot Bath in Tibiao is a unique and very unmissable activity when in Antique. It’s like getting cooked alive in a huge kawa (cauldron) but nothing to be afraid of, as it is one of the most relaxing activities one would ever experience.

MASAI MARA, KENYA

The Masai Mara in southwestern Kenya is a preserved savannah, home to thousands of animals throughout the grassy plains. Home to the Great Migration. One of nature’s greatest events (and one of the Seven National Wonders of Africa) this part of the world is a must-visit for any nature lover.

Over two million animals travel from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the Masai Mara. The Great Migration happens over about three months of the year when the wildebeest, gazelles, and zebras follow the rain. Even if you don’t go during the Migration, you can still see plenty of these animals in the Mara.

Wildebeest, zebras, elephants, and giraffes are easily spotted throughout the Mara. They graze peacefully with the various gazelles. While the cheetah, lions, and crocodiles are harder to spot in the bush.

You may even spot a leopard resting in the trees! You can also keep an eye out for the Big Five – water buffalo, lions, elephants, rhinos, and leopards.

The untouched nature of the Masai Mara makes it, unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.

Whether you love challenging hikes, pristine beaches, UNESCO heritage cultural scenes, or volcanoes… Cape Verde has it for you. Indeed, the hikes of Santo Antao are considered some of the most breathtaking ones in the world.

When it comes to beaches, the islands of Boa Vista and Sal have been converted into major tourist hubs with large resorts. If you are looking for untouched, pristine beaches, look no further than Maio, where you’ll have sandy beaches all for your own.

Bruny Island is a stunningly beautiful island located off the south-east coast of Tasmania, Australia. It is known for its rugged coastline, pristine beaches, and lush rainforest. The island is home to a variety of wildlife including wallabies, echidnas, and many species of birds.

AO NANG, THAILAND

Located off the coast of Thailand from Ao Nang lies the marine national park of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park. It was established in 1983 and is a protected area with natural coral reefs, tropical islands, and a stunning coastline.

Many of the islands are deserted, and only accessible by boat. The most famous way of reaching them is via the long tail boats from various points from both the Krabi and Phuket coastlines. The paradise islands have beautiful scenery, crystal clear waters, and white sandy beaches. Visiting them by long-tail boat is often combined with snorkeling and diving.

One of the most famous of the islands of the National Park is Koh Phi Phi Leh in which you can find Maya Bay. Its sheltered beach was made famous by the film “The Beach.”

While this is one of the most famous islands, it was closed by the Thai government for some time to allow the beach and bay to recover from over-tourism.

Another place to visit in the Hat Noppharat Thara – Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park is Shell Cemetery, an area of fossilized shells embedded in layers of shell and rock.

It is worth visiting some smaller islands too such as Ko Kai (Chicken Island), Ko Poda. And Tup Island is a small island connected to Chicken Island by a sandbank.

This National Park is one of the most beautiful places in the world, but visit them as sustainably as possible and leave no trace behind you.

Bled Island

Bled Island is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Located in Slovenia, this small island is situated on Lake Bled and is home to a picturesque church and a stunning castle. The island can be reached by boat from the mainland, and visitors can take a leisurely stroll around its perimeter or climb up to the top of the castle for beautiful views of the lake and surrounding area.

JACO ISLAND, TIMOR LESTE

Jaco Island, on the eastern tip of Timor Leste, is a true paradise on earth. Picture a virgin beach with crystal clear water and white sand.

In the middle of the island, lush vegetation and a few monkeys. Picture a place where staying overnight and building anything are strictly forbidden. That’s Jaco, a sacred island protected by locals and so hard to reach only a handful of tourists make the trip each year.

It’s a 9-hour drive from the capital, Dili (it took me 2 days in public transportation), on terrible roads, to reach Valu Beach. There, are two small hotels offering camping spots and a few bungalows, and the fishermen association, waiting to take you to Jaco.

The beach in Valu is also incredible, it seems as if time has stopped and left this place almost untouched. It’s the perfect spot to disconnect (no wifi or even service) and unwind for a few days.

One would be tempted to swim to Jaco Island as it’s so close to Valu Beach, but don’t get fooled by the peaceful-looking sea. Between the mainland and the island, there’s a strong current, populated by crocodiles and sharks.

The remoteness of the island, mixed with its protected status, makes it one of the most stunning beaches in the world. As well as one of the 30 most beautiful places in the world.

OLD SILK ROUTE, INDIA

One of the most beautiful places in the world is the Old Silk Route. The place is blessed with beautiful lakes. And some breathtaking twisting and winding roads that make it a real treasure to watch in this part of the country.

The route includes a lot of plantations and elegant and breathtaking scenery. And wonderful landscapes not found elsewhere within the region.

There used to be trade operations in this region a few years back that were discontinued due to new rule formations in this district.

The road has a lot of twisted alleys and ridges along with snow-covered mountain ranges. There are some important lakes like Kupup, Elephant, and Tsomgo in this corner of the country that are considered high crater lakes. There are military operations within the area that maintains the roads and the dignity of the region.

The lovely landscape and scenery continue to impress travelers with their aesthetic advent. And remain an important treasure hunt for people coming to scout this corner of the region with friends and families.
