Of course, when you are in the Alps there will be plenty of space to enjoy the outdoors. Morzine is no exception and mountain biking is a popular activity for many visitors. Some say it’s the best place for mountain bikers in the Alps! There’s some terrific terrain runs and it helps that Ski lifts are adapted to help bikers get to vantage points to start their rides. Some package holidays include free bike hire and safety equipment for the duration of your stay, so you’ll be ready to go as soon as you arrive.
Walking and Hiking
To explore what the area offers at your own pace, then setting out on a mountain hike is a great idea. The high mountain route can be accessed by chair lifts and cable cars, giving you the perfect starting point without the effort. Walking along the route around Avoriaz will give you some spectacular vantage point views sometimes at 2000 metres above sea level! As you would expect there are a variety of well sign posted routes that cater for those wanting an easy stroll up to a difficult hike. You can either relax by the water’s edge or take part in the splash fest in the pool. There’s fun for all the family in the aquatic centre at the heart or Morzine. Visiting here is a great way to enjoy the sunshine and have a break from the exercise whilst soaking up those high-altitude rays. If the weather isn’t too great there’s an indoor pool too. As well as a kid’s pool to entertain the children and saunas and steam rooms for the adults to relax in.
For families with children this is an amazing experience. Children can learn about life on the farm by helping feed the animals, making cheese and looking after the pigs, cows and other farmyard animals. You’ll also get some petting time too, and learn about what happens in all processes of farming. Farming apprentice activities usually last about two hours and are suitable for children of ages three and up. A very different kind of activity for the kids to enjoy on a holiday in the Alps.
Following marked routes through the mountains you can explore the area in a unique and heart-pumping way. You are aided by steps, bridges and ladders of suspended walkways, and don’t worry you’ll be roped up for extra safety. It might look scary but it is an experience you’ll never forget, especially for keen hikers, or climbers. There are numerous routes around the Haute Savoie and each small group tour is led by an experienced high mountain guide.
It might take you an hour to cycle or about 40 minutes to jog to Lac Montriond from Morzine. Once you get there you can try swimming or fishing followed by a scenic picnic lunch. You can also rent kayaks from around 15 Euros and you can experience and explore the beautiful Lac Montriond in your own little boat! There’s always something to do at the lake. Whether it’s relaxing and taking in the views or enjoying sports out on the water. Check with your tour operator to find out what activities are available during your stay.
At the top of the Chaux Fleurie lift you’ll find the beginning of a 3 km zipwire that reaches speeds of up to 100 km per hour. Wow! It’s a unique experience, flying across the Alps strapped into a harness watching the world pass by below. The whole distance is covered by two flights and can be flown by yourself or in tandem if you wish. The adrenalin pumping trip will cost you 36 euros per person, with a discount if you have a multi-pass or a MTB pass.
In the forest of Nyon, not far away from Morzine by bike, you’ll find a park full of adventure. You can try walking through the tree tops climbing ladders and across rope bridges. Then make rapid decent through the tress by zip wire or aerial runway. It’s fun to navigate your way through the maze of trees and ropes. There are three different courses to try and plenty of other activities in the area too. A place that is great for the whole family with varied abilities, just choose the course that’s best for you.
There are both indoor and outdoor skating rinks to try in Morzine. For a fun evening of music and skating check out the Ice on fire sessions at the Skoda Arena. You can buy both individual entry tickets or a multi-day pass depending on how often you intend to skate. The small 30x15m outdoor ice rink is found next to the Morzine Tourist Office and is open to the public every day during the winter season. There’s music and lights to skate along to and free skating shows every Thursday from 6pm to 7pm.
Sometimes you just need a bit of time to sit down, relax and watch a film. Going to the cinema is also an excellent way to keep the kids quiet too! Le Rex Cinema in Morzine has film screenings in both English and French. There are daily showings in both languages and a variety of films to choose from. Cinema tickets are never usually included in tour package prices but prices are only €8.50 for adults, €6.50 for children under 10. There’s also a discount if there are more than ten people in your group.
