Backpacking Greek Islands

Let’s take a look of a list of Greek Islands.

How many islands are in Greece? Brace yourself because you might find the answer surprising.

Greece has a total of 6,000 islands. (I told you to brace yourself).

Now, that number might be daunting.

How do you find the best Greek islands when you have 6,000 to choose from!?

But wait! Don’t get discouraged yet. As most of these islands aren’t inhabited.

Only 227 of the Greek Islands have people living on them. Yep, that is still a huge number but is much more manageable.

Here is the list of islands in Greece. As well as a Greek islands maps showing you where to find the most popular islands..

Saronic Islands

List of Islands in Greece

The Saronic Islands are a popular destination for people backpacking Greece.
These islands are also popular among locals searching for a weekend getaway; since they are the closest islands to Athens.

Because of this, some islands are touristy. Which is fine if you’re searching to sandy beaches, crystal clear water, and a beautiful place to relax then these islands are perfect.

Islands like Hydra don’t have cars and have a local atmosphere.

The most popular among tourist are Skyros, Alonissos, Skiathos, and Skopelos. And Skiathos and Skopelos have some of the best beaches in Greece.

Dodecanese Islands

The Dodecanese island chain comprises 164 islands and islets. 26  have people living on them. However, there are 12 main islands.

Cretan islands

List of Greek Islands: Crete

Crete’s the star of the Cretan islands. (I bet you didn’t see that coming).

Crete’s stands out on this list of Greek Island as the biggest, and it’s rich in history and legend. Because of its size, Crete often overshadows the other nearby islands.

But there are dozens of serene islands lie in the Aegean and Libyan Seas.

Many of them are nature parks or contain remnants of ancient civilizations.

Gavdos’ the only island (other than Crete) that’s inhabited.

Ionian Islands

Corfu

The Ionian sea has one complex of islands. These islets differ greatly from the Cyclades and Dodecanese.
Lying on the far west of the country; the Ionian islands have firm roots in their Venetian Republic, which they were a part of for thousands of years. So if you’ve every wondered what it’s like backpacking Italy, these islands are a good stop for you.

The group of islands extends from Corfu in the far north along the coast of the Peloponnese.

When we talk of the Ionian Islands, most people think of seven main islands – Corfu, Ithaka (Ithaca), Kefalonia, Kythira, Lefkada, Paxi, and Zakynthos. With Corfu being the most well known. And the island that gets the most tourists.

Northern Aegean Islands

List of Islands in Greece

The Northern Aegean Islands aren’t the most well known in Greece. But those who wander there are surprised by the castles, towering mountains, mountain villages, stunning coastlines, and untouched beaches.

Lemnos is one of the best places, on this list of islands in Greece, for beach bums. The Island has sandy and uncrowded beaches.

The Northern Aegean play a part in the famous Greek mythology and legends.
