EUROPE TRAVEL TIPS AND TRICKS
Now, I have over two years traveling through Europe on countless trips. Along the way, I’ve made mistakes and also learned the dos and donts of backpacking Europe.
This is a complete list of backpacking Europe travel tips. We cover everything from money-saving tips to the best cities to visit when backpacking Europe.
I wrote this guide as if I were heading to Europe on one of my first trips. Covering all the backpacking Europe tips that I wish I would have known.
Common Questions About Traveling Europe
Is Europe safe?
I get many emails from people expressing a need to backpacking across Europe, but they’re afraid or nervous. It can be intimidating being so far from home.
My first Europe travel tip is just to do it! Don’t worry you will be fine. I have never once felt threatened, scared, or nervous.
When to visit Europe?
It varies on what time of year you are visiting. Winter you need heavy gear which cost a bit more.
How long do you need when traveling Europe?
It depends on your itinerary. Personal, I suggest backpacking Europe as a long as you can. What makes Europe unique is the vast amount of different cultures and countries crammed into such a small space. I would say minimum you need a couple of weeks, and maximum three months because of the Schengen visa laws. (Read How to Plan Your Europe Itinerary)
Which Cities Should I go to?
We will get into some of the best European cities later on in the post. However, I thought I would list some of my personal favorite cities to visit in Europe. I love Rome, Paris, Lisbon, Budapest, Stockholm, and Barcelona. (Read What Makes these the Best European Cities to Visit)
Do I Really Need Travel Insurance?
That is your decision. However, it is always smart to protect yourself that is what travel insurance does. Travel insurance has saved me a lot of money when backpacking Europe and covers me on adventures like running with the bulls or skydiving. (Read Is It Worth It to Buy Travel Insurance)
What Companies Can I Trust?
Good question! With so many companies pulling you left and right trying to get you to book a walking tour, day trip, and sightseeing bus it is hard to know who to trust. I list some of my all time favorite companies in my Europe resources.
I’ve been traveling the world 24/7 for the last 7 years. Along the way I have found some pretty cool places, learned awesome stunning travel tips, and had unforgettable adventures. Helping you travel is my passion.

Sweet Lord, this was an epic post, mate!
You know, I’ve never actually managed to check off the ‘backpack through Europe’ goal I set myself way back when I first hit the road in 2007. Reading this re-energized me to hopefully tackle a little of Europe in between TBEX and WTM this year.
Gonna give this sumbitch a pin for that occasion.
Haha thanks bro! It was a monster of a post to write. Getting ready to Revamp my Backpacking Southeast post in the same way.
You headed to TBEX Isreal? I am 98% sure I am going!!
Thanks for the pin brother! Hopefully see you soon.
You wrote a very useful guide about everything that means backpacking Europe, so now I feel ready to hit the road thanks to you. I love your suggestions and all the advice you’ve given. I would love if you could visit Romania, as well, it has many great destinations to offer.
Romania is a good destination! I spent a month there. Sometimes I loved others with just “alright” but it is definitely worth checking out.
Thanks for providing awesome tips for your travels through Europe. I found this post very insightful and I especially can’t wait to add Amsterdam to my upcoming destinations.
Thanks Steph! Amsterdam is such a cool city! Any travel plans there soon?
I agree with a lot of this. Europe doesn’t have to be super expensive if traveled smart. I am a huge fan of eastern Europe because it can be way cheaper than western Europe. The cost is spot on. Do check the local bus companies for travel deals. I once went from Munich to Berlin for 17 Euros.
Local bus companies is a great option! I do use them a lot. I will add it in the list.
I back packed in Europe in 2012 and I agree with most of the things you wrote here. THis year, I am planning to go back. I want to do Croatia, the sail croatia looks like a nice bet to do.
Hey Karla! Sail Croatia is awesome I did Busabout Sail Croatia and loved it.
Backpacking Europe is the dream. I’ve visited many of these cities, but I would love to do an extended trip. I’m still trying to finagle this.
Do it! I can help if you like. Email me at stephen@abackpackerstale.com
Wow a lot of great info. Great to know especially if you’re just getting started.
Thanks for the comment! Glad you enjoyed it Holly.
This is a great guide to backpacking! I’m not a backpacker but this info is helpful since I like knowing how much I should expect to spend in a city. This is also helpful for those who are budget travelers but not necessarily backpacking.
Glad you liked it Mia!
Wow what an interesting read. I too loved Istanbul. So many different areas; middle east, European, business, hipster etc. I loved it.
Travel insurance is a massive thing. It can be expensive to get but even more expensive if something happens. I have never had to claim but i have been close to.
Thanks for your post, it is truly everything I needed to know 🙂
Thanks for reading! I love Istanbul. It is a great introduction to the middle east.
Excellent and very detailed list! I love backpacking through Europe – although I never used an actual backpack lol. I agree that hostels are the way to go! I always book in advance as well. I can’t believe you’ve had to sleep on the street before!
Thanks for reading. Glad you like hostels as much as me.
I find your findings very similar to mine. Although, I think you can well do Europe well below the 1k a month budget if you couchsurfed, hitchhiked, and traveled around in the Balkans and Eastern Europe 🙂
Thanks for the comment Adonis. I agree Europe can be done for cheaper. Not everyone wants to hitchike and couchsurf though. This is a good estimate for everyone.
Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the blog!
I’m planning on going backpacking next year. I’ll be 21 and thinking of traveling solo.
I’m Australian/Colombian. I only want to be there for 2 months or less. Will I be safe you reckon? I’ll obviously stay in the youth hostels! Hopefully I meet lots of nice women!!! I want to experience the music side of things, bush parties. Underground clubs/psytrance/hardstyle. Still need to do lots of research but this gave me a rough idea!
Thanks again 🙂

I think going on pub crawl would be great experience.
I think, around the world from beautiful Paris, to smoke filled coffee shops in Amsterdam, to Oktoberfest, to the beaches of Greece, there’s so much to see on the continent I couldn’t name it all even if I tried. But even if you aren’t about to backpack around Europe, the continent holds wonderful beaches, historical architecture, amazing wine, and wonderful people. Every country is incredibly different than the next. I’ve visited the continent every summer and always find something new that blows my mind. This extensive backpacking travel guide will help you visit the continent on a budget.
So true! This is why Europe is the most unforgettable place on the planet to me. I simply cannot get enough of it.
