It is important to note that U.S. Customs suggest bringing a government issued I.D. Personally, in the name of safety I would recommend bringing two forms of identification.

Another option is emailing pictures of multiple IDs to yourself in case yours gets damaged, lost, or stolen.

Will I have Trouble with Airlines?

But while it is not required for U.S. citizens to have a passport to go to Puerto Rico, I have heard and read cases of where the airlines tell customers that they must have a passport to get on the plane.

They rushed ordered a passport for their son, but when they got to the airport, no one asked to see the passports. So they spent almost $300 on a rush order passport for nothing. if this happens to you tell them that you ask they think that you do need a passport to go to Puerto Rico.

When the Miami Herald wrote a post and contacted the airline, they were reimbursed for the rush order of a passport.

For Puerto Rico passports are not required, but you never know what the airlines are going to say. If you have a passport, then I would consider bringing it in case of trouble.

When Do You Need Passport to Go To Puerto Rico?

There is only one instance that I have found in which citizens of the United States will need a passport to go to Puerto Rico, and that is if you are flying in from another country.

For example, if you are an American Citizen but and are catching an insanely cheap flight directly from backpacking Europe to San Juan, you will need to show your passport when you land in Puerto Rico.

However, this shouldn’t be a huge hassle because if you are in another country, then you have your passport anyway. You will need to show your passport so make sure you don’t pack it in your checked luggage.
